In today's Ottawa Sun, columnist Jordan Michael Smith wrote one of the most Islamophoic articles I have ever read lately. The article talks about anti-semitism amongst leftists yet his constant bashing of, what he calls, "Islamists" is found throughout the article. Smith's concerned with the way that people criticize those that support Israel because of their Jewish faith. However, it seems OK for him to criticize Muslims because of their Islamic faith.
The problem that I really have with Smith's article is that he fails to acknowledge the fact that it is people's interpretation of their faith that is being criticized. As an example, zionists (both Christian and Jewish) interpret their faith in such a way that orders them to support the establishment of Israel (even if it's at the expense of Palestine). However, there are other Jews who refuse this interpretation (namely the Naturei Karta and JewsNotZionists.org among others). So, when these groups criticize other Judeo-Christian interpretations, are they also being anti-semitic??
Before using terms such as "Islamist", Smith should study the interpretations that these culprits made in order to commit the crimes that they commit. And again, it is these interpretations that are being criticized not the faith itself. In fact, as Muslims, we share a common understanding with both Peoples of the Book (as they are called in the Qur'an) in that we are all following faiths that were brought down to humanity from God through Prophets.
It seems as though in criticizing people who blindly attack a whole religion…Smith has done so himself.
